Caecilian

Siphonops annulatus

About

Caecilians are limbless, burrowing amphibians that look like large earthworms or snakes. They're the least-known order of amphibians, with about 220 species found in tropical regions of South America, Africa, and Asia.

Their Eggs

Large, yolky eggs (relative to body size) laid in underground burrows near water. The eggs are connected in a rosary-like chain and guarded by the mother.

Fun Fact

Some caecilian species practice dermatotrophy — the mother grows a thick, nutrient-rich outer layer of skin, and her hatchlings peel and eat it. They have specialized teeth for skin-feeding. It is exactly as metal as it sounds.
