Sea Turtle

Chelonia mydas

About

Green sea turtles are one of the largest sea turtle species, weighing up to 315 kg. They return to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs — navigating across entire oceans to find it.

Their Eggs

Soft, leathery, white, spherical eggs about the size of a ping-pong ball. Laid in deep pits excavated in sandy beaches under cover of darkness.

Fun Fact

Sea turtle egg sex is determined by temperature, not genetics. Warmer sand (above 29°C) produces females; cooler sand produces males. Climate change is skewing sex ratios dramatically — some populations are now over 90% female.
