About

Seahorses are the only animals in which the male becomes pregnant. The female deposits her eggs into the male's brood pouch, where he fertilizes them and carries them to term.

Their Eggs

Tiny, orange, pear-shaped eggs deposited by the female into the male's ventral brood pouch, where they embed in the pouch wall and receive nutrients.

Fun Fact

Male seahorses go through actual labor contractions to give birth, expelling fully formed miniature seahorses from their brood pouch. A single male can give birth to up to 2,000 babies in one session, though most species produce 100–300.
