Turkey

Meleagris gallopavo

About

Native to North America and domesticated by indigenous peoples of Mexico at least 2,000 years ago. Turkey eggs are perfectly edible and delicious — you just rarely see them because turkeys are more profitable sold for meat.

Their Eggs

Large, pointed eggs with a cream to tan shell covered in brown speckles. Roughly 50% larger than a chicken egg with a richer, creamier flavor.

Egg Size Comparison

Chicken 55mm
Turkey 65mm
118% of chicken egg

Fun Fact

A turkey hen lays only about 100 eggs per year (vs. 300 for a chicken), and each turkey requires more feed and space. This economic math is the only reason turkey eggs aren't at every grocery store.
